The Process
I wanted to go with something analog and gritty for contrast. I had recently received a Raspberry Pi and was playing around with coding for the sense HAT (it has an 8x8 LED grid light). I decided to try displaying the letters I needed on the Raspberry Pi.
I photographed each letter with a DSLR camera, but the images came out too sharp. I wanted something totally blown out–almost dystopian–so I recorded video on a cheap android camera. I started getting the results I wanted. Here are a few of the samples I used.
I arranged the letters into a simple boxy grid for a digital feel, then layered textures, tweaked levels, added color–all the fun Photoshop stuff–until I got the final result.
It was a fun chance to build something in the real world and experiment with physical materials. I'm happy with the results and plan on trying similar projects in the future.
